Are you free on Saturday morning some time between 9am and 10am to join us for a virtual isolation family disco...?
My daughter is really missing her friends, and fun, and school discos, and so she came up with this idea a few days ago, encouraged by her brother: to start DISCO HOUR, a virtual disco party this Saturday 11th April, and any Saturday after that...
("And you're going to tell everyone and share it on social media for me, Mum...") She's got a clear vision, that one, and some serious persistence skills.
We're not attempting a live call or anything tricky and technical, the plan is simply to have a bit of a dance in our homes (or out the front, performing some epic socially distanced dance moves for our opposite neighbour's amusement...) knowing that our lovely friends and family, and maybe even some equally lovely people that we don't know yet, will also be dancing along with us - however far away they may be.
In recent days, she's also had a lot of fun making a spotify playlist for us all to dance to - which is optional of course, just in case you're not into the particular flavour of cheesy pop favoured by nine year old girls (personally, it's a hit with me!). You can find that over here. If you have any favourite tunes that are guaranteed to get you dancing, let us know and we'll add them!
But feel free to use whatever music you like, or even have your own silent disco. And you can join in for a little bit or the whole hour, whatever suits you. Every disco move counts. AND you don't have to be a kid, or even with your 'family' to join in, - because we are all one big family according to her.
And while 9am BST may not seem the classic hour for a disco (unless you’re an expert all-nighter), but she chose that so that friends and family in other parts of the world could join in too.
And please help her to spread the word: If you like the idea too, we'd love you to share when you're doing it - the daughter even found a hashtag no one else was using, especially for that: #familydiscohour.
So... here are the posters she made, now proudly displayed in our window alongside the rainbow of course - and a translation of her words below:
"Let's bring some happiness into our lives: it's what we all need right now: DISCO HOUR. Join in anytime between 9 and 10 am on a Saturday. Share photos and videos of you having fun using the hashtag #familydiscohour. Starts Saturday 11th April at 9.00am UK time (if in other country timezone we've worked it out so you can do it too). Every Saturday at 9am UK time."
Fingers crossed it won't just be me and the girl throwing shapes for the neighbours while the husband hides away in shame and embarrassment...!
