I'm a Piece

Let's enlist some Mama Power and join the Craftivist Collective to make a giant jigsaw filled with provocative messages to support Save the Children's campaign against hunger and malnutrition.

Download the template, stitch your message, share a photo of your piece of the jigsaw here and send the original to the collective by 21 February 2013. More info below.

instructions

Everything you need to know to make your jigsaw piece can be found here via the Craftivist Collective (there's a big download button top right if you want a free jigsaw template and instructions).

You can even buy a cute kit including material from here if you don't have time to cut out and make up your own jigsaw piece.

The gist of it is you print the template, cut it out, draw round it on a nice bit of material and cut that out, then sew on your message. This is my attempt. I have no idea what 'stitch' I was attempting, it came out very wonky, but I'm still really proud of it!

However you do it, you will need a least an hour (probably more if you're fat-fingered like me) to cut out your jigsaw shaped bit of material and sew on your message.

It's obviously hard to find time as a busy mother, but of course that's one of the great strengths of the idea - it shows that we care enough to take that precious time to make a difference. (And it's actually very relaxing to sit and sew a political message onto a jigsaw, who knew...?)

As I am rubbish at sewing, you can see I came up with as short a phrase as possible, so something like 'be the change' or 'stop hunger' is probably a good place to start!

Though if you're already an ace seamstress already, why not go for it with something spectacular like:

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." Dwight D. Eisenhower

The Craftivist Collective link above gives you some great suggestions for quotes to use if you can't think of one.

We would of course love you to share a picture of your completed jigsaw piece here so we can shout about how amazing mums are and demonstrate our powerful communal voice, but the most crucial thing is that you send your completed piece to the Craftivist Collective before the end of February 2013 when they will be gathering them all up together to make a huge art installation.

NOTE: If you haven't  registered with story of mum yet, you will see 'join us' on the button above - so click on that and fill in the quick registration form. You'll immediately receive an email that will allow you to log back in and join in any of the activities on the site. You can find more information on joining us here.
