The lovely Johanna Flowers designed our new logo. She's also a new mum (which we didn't know until we chose her design - how perfect is that!). Here are her thoughts on combining studying and motherhood, and how she came up with our gorgeous hot air balloon...
Becoming a mum in the middle of my degree was the best thing that could have happened. Obviously because I have an amazing little person in my life but also because it has motivated me more than I could imagine on my return after maternity leave.
I was a little nervous on my return, purely because I felt that becoming a mum had oozed out the last bit of coolness I may have possessed and with my fellow students being 20 year old trendy graphic designers who probably don't have to tuck their belly into their jeans in the morning, I was, to say the least, a little self conscious.
I needn't have worried… my first project was to work on a new logo for Story of Mum, it couldn't have been more perfect.
It was such a great project to work on and I had great fun coming up with ideas.
I wanted the logo to embrace the sense of fun Story of Mum offers along with a great community and the freedom to be creative for yourself.
I came up with the balloon from looking at strong, curved shapes and felt that it really represented pregnancy and then the journey that comes from that which requires courage and growth.
I knew that I wasn't going to be sat making artwork on a computer for this and experimented with bold prints made from potatoes and my hands… it was very therapeutic!
I was amazed when I got shortlisted to the last five, it was such a confidence booster reading some of the lovely comments and feedback was brilliant, but then to have my design finally chosen was the highlight of my return to university so far.
It also meant that I could finally disclose my secret of actually being a new mum to Pippa and Penny, which just made it the perfect project.
We're really thrilled with our final logo - and all of the input from the community. If you'd like to join our exhibition (Story of Mum: Mums making an exhibition of ourselves) by adding your own I'm a mum and a... photo, we'd love to see it - join in here!
If you'd like to host your own virtual mini-exhibition, you can find out more here.
